Lee
(mother of 15)
A native of Laos, Lee has been in America since 1979. She married her husband when she was only 15 (he was 18) back in Laos. They first had two children who died in Thailand then had four more who survived. They were brought over to America as refugees after her husband helped American soldiers in the Vietnam War. In the United States, they had nine more children. Now, all their ages range from 41 – 17 years old.
Not knowing much about this country or the language, she wanted all her children to go to school and get an education. She brought them up in the traditional Hmong culture and always wants them to treasure their culture. Her biggest wish is for her children to be happy and successful. With such a large family, every couple of months they have “family meetings” where everyone gets together to discuss what’s going on in their lives and how everyone is doing.
One of her daughters, May See, was our translator for our interview and I felt like a part of their family during it. In the near future, I plan on having dinner with everyone and learning more about the Hmong culture.
Thank you Lee and May See! I cannot wait to visit again and learn more!
