“Shaunae, I know I need a headshot on my website but I don’t even know where to get started. How do I choose the best one?” I get this question a lot! A well photographed headshot IS so important for not only your site, but your business in general. It’s your potential client’s first look into the person behind the business. Today, potential clients are more interested in the person and the story behind the business, than actually finding the best “deal.” For today’s Tell-All Tuesday, here are a few tips to choose the PERFECT headshot for your business!
Hire a Professional
Even if you are a photographer yourself, hire ANOTHER professional photographer to photograph your headshots. The best way to look professional and to be taken seriously for your craft is to make sure your photos are professional. Even if you are going for a more relaxed, laid back vibe (like my headshots) you still should have a pro photograph you!
Fit Your Brand
Make sure your headshot is cohesive with your brand. Incorporate your brand colors into your outfit choices. Choose backgrounds that fit with your ideal setting. Think about your ideal clients, how would they react? Keep your brand and clients in mind when choosing your perfect headshot.
Props or no props?
No props!! The only time it’s ok to have “props” is when you want to be very clear on what you do. For photographers, you can have your camera. Hair and make-up artists, maybe one of your brushes. You can also have your headshots taken in your workspace. This lets people in on your creative space!
Personality
Gone are the days of the weird colored backdrop, sitting on the stool in a cold studio, tilting your head slightly, and staring at the camera. Headshots do NOT have to be traditional. Add your own personality into it! That’s what will make the images feel authentic and natural!
To Look at the Camera VS To Not Look at the Camera
There is no right answer, either is great! Just think about what you want to come across. If you are selling something or trying to get your point across I suggest a photo of you looking at the camera. Studies show that if a viewer/potential client can look into your eyes, they are more likely to trust you. When in doubt, I recommend choosing one of you looking at the camera.
Once you choose your PERFECT headshot, make sure it’s consistent across your social media. Your Instagram, Facebook, Twitter should all have the same photo. This makes your social media easily recognizable across all platforms.
