I absolutely loved getting to meet Yvonne and her daughter, Sabine, for our photo session. Sabine had the cutest facial expressions the entire time! She was so curious and sweet. It was so adorable to watch these two together and learn more about Yvonne’s motherhood journey.
Tell us about your motherhood journey
Even at a very young age I always knew I wanted to be a mother. I volunteered at Children’s Hospital throughout high school and college and I nannied several babies until they were toddlers. My husband and I got married at the beginning of 2021 and found out we were pregnant a couple months later. We were still living with my in-laws at the time so we knew we couldn’t hide it from them for too long since I was so tired and did not have an appetite during the first trimester. We decided to tell our families the next week which also happened to be Mother’s Day weekend. Everyone was so excited and supportive since there hasn’t been a baby in the family in so many years. We also decided to not find out the sex of the baby until they were born. Since my experience has only been with taking care of babies, I had no idea what to expect about pregnancy and birth. I’m a planner and love researching so during those nine months I spent a lot of time making sure I was taking care of my body and preparing for labor.
I wanted to have an unmedicated birth so I listened to a lot of positive birth stories and researched different options in case I changed my mind. I was on maternity leave for over a month before our baby’s due date and as the days went on I was so eager for them to join us! I was hoping our baby would come earlier but they were born two days after their due date. I was in labor for 29 hours and after 17 minutes of pushing we finally met our baby girl!
What does being a mom mean to you?
Being a mom means doing everything I can to make sure my daughter feels supported and loved. It also means making sure I’m doing everything I can to be the best version of myself so I can be a present mom and a good role model for her as she grows up.
What is one thing you wish you would have known before becoming a mom?
I spent so much time researching and preparing for birth that I didn’t really know what postpartum or breastfeeding would be like. I had no idea the physical and mental strain breastfeeding would be. Fed is best, but I chose to breastfeed for as long as I could so we could save money. It was a rough couple of months until we found our routine!
Tell us about a moment when you were in awe of your child
I’m constantly in awe as I see her becoming more aware of her surroundings and her personality developing. I remember the first time we asked her a question and she knew what we meant. We asked her where our doggy was and she started to look around and pointed to the door just as our doggy sprinted through. We were so surprised because I don’t think she ever pointed at anything before that. It’s been amazing to see her grow and develop so many skills!
What is something you do just for yourself? How do you take care of yourself?
I’m still working on this but I would love to get back to quilting! I took a quilting class a couple months before covid happened and had so much fun. During the pandemic I made a couple of quilts. Hopefully this summer I can start that back up. I also like to go on walks and spend time outdoors when the weather isn’t too bad. Since I spend more of my time indoors teaching, I’ll take all the time I can outside.
