I’m always on the look-out for businesses that are going above and beyond. I adore businesses that offer something unique, execute it perfectly, and care about their customers/clients above everything else. Choosing a business owner to be featured on my Vendor Love series means a lot to me, I’m super picky. I want to share my honest opinion when talking about other businesses and I believe my clients deserve the absolute best vendors. The Knotted Cone, Gelato Co. is totally one of them!
The Knotted Cone is my new obsession! I first discovered their portable gelato truck at the Farmers’ Market last year but it wasn’t until my dear friend, Karli, owner of Almond & Ivy, started collaborating with them that my obsession grew. I met with The Knotted Cone’s owner, Kathy, to learn more about the gelato making process and how she got into this business. We spent hours just hanging out and eating lots of gelato and it’s safe to say, I adore Kathy! Her passion for her craft means so much more than just creating a sweet treat. She is truly a gelato visionary and I totally want to see her gelato truck at all my weddings next year!
When did you start your business?
“I started my business in 2015 with the grand gelato ‘idea.’ I backpacked Europe for two months and instantly fell in love with this one amazing little gelato shop in Rome. After I got home, originally I approached gelato has a hobby. However, I quickly learned gelato is more than a hobby it’s a passion, an art, a love, and an artisan craft. After several months of research and planning, I took the next step of making this my full time career.
In February 2016, I flew back to Italy to learn from the true professionals on how to make this delicious dessert. I studied at Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna Italy, where I learned to make everything from scratch. I learned how to balance each recipe, use the machinery, create my own sauces, and master gelato technique. In April 2016 The Knotted Cone Gelato Co. became not only my legal company, but my energy, my personal passion, and my art. I then took one of the most delicious desserts and decided to bring it to people on wheels. Summer 2016, I spent creating and designing my gelato truck. It is completely custom built for proper gelato serving and has become my “baby” in a sense. I opened the windows September 1st, 2016 and the wheels haven’t stopped since!”
What interested you about your craft? Why start your own business?
“The interest for gelato came from the simple joy and love for it. I have always been an ice cream lover and once I tried gelato it was (as I say) “game over” for me. I knew this was something I could love to do for a long time. I knew this business would put my communication background to work, allow me to use my creativity, and also be something I could do with my hands (not at a desk) that people would really enjoy. Business for me has become my life. I figured if I was going to do something for the next long while, I might as well adore it and I might as well make it my own.”
How would you describe your style?
“My style for The Knotted Cone is a classy vintage look with a modern vibe. I have always had a little bit of an old soul when it comes to style. I am a big thrifting fan, I enjoy finding treasures at estate sales, so most of the decor/appeal stemmed from this hobby of mine. However, I really think I brought it all together with a modern logo, a classy look, and fresh flare.”
What are some of your unique offerings?
“On our truck we offer gelato & sorbet cones/dishes along with affogato (gelato drowned in espresso) plus newly added gelato macaron sandwiches featuring
Almond & Ivy’s artisan macarons. Our fresh gelato & sorbets are always unique because I change my recipes and flavors weekly. I use only fresh raw ingredients, so it definitely comes down to the season what I can find available.”
“People always ask me my favorite flavor: I say ‘I love them all, because I make them all.’ However, some new fan favorites are our Blueberry Vanilla Goat Cheese, Raspberry Pistacchio, and nobody can go wrong with our Dark Chocolate Mocha Chip.”
Favorite business experience?
“My favorite business experience has been making global connections in the gelato world. I not only learned this awesome craft, but I have met some amazing people in this industry. I have become friends with gelato chefs from around the globe. It’s rather unreal to me what some people can make and do. It has helped me to grow in my own business as well as have people to count on when I get stuck. I am not only making a dessert that tastes amazing, but getting to travel and learn more is keeping the experience alive for me.”
Tell us more about yourself!
“This business feels sometimes like it has become my life for the last three years, but aside from that I love to spend time with family and friends. I am very outgoing and never afraid to step out of a comfort zone. I am a huge sucker for coffee, snuggling in my bed, animals, travel, photography, and anything outdoors. Those all sound a little standard, so something unique…I hate wearing socks, I have frequent solo dance parties while making gelato, I used to work and live in Arizona, I am addicted to fruit snacks, I find frogs truly disgusting, and someday I will live by some water with perhaps a pet otter. Otherwise, I am creative and thoughtful at heart, I am very rarely selfish in any aspect, I am humbly grateful for my family and their support in this business, and I am driven to be amazing at what I do forever and always.”
