I’m sure you’ve heard at every single workshop, seminar, or mentor session that if you want to reach more potential clients you have to figure out WHO your ideal client is first. It can seem like a daunting task. How do I know who my ideal client is? Do I really need to know? Can’t I just market to everyone? It’s SO important to figure out WHO your ideal client is so you can tailor everything specifically to them. By putting out only what you want to attract, you can start filling your calendar with couples and clients that you absolutely LOVE!
Before I really narrowed down who my clientele was, my posting was all over the place. I wasn’t clear on what I wanted so I started attracting any and everyone. We think that’s a good thing, we’re casting a wide net. But what it’s really doing is confusing the world. Instead of looking like an “expert” in ONE thing, we look just “good enough” in A LOT of things. I’m telling you now, you won’t get paid what you deserved to be paid if you are being perceived as good enough.
So before we go any further in our business, we must figure out our ideal client. Who are they? Where do they shop? How do they receive their information? By getting in the minds of our “perfect” clients, we can figure out ways to better attract them. We can guarantee that how our website looks, the way we speak, what we post on social media all fit in with what we truly want. There are a few ways to start figuring out exactly WHO our ideal clients are.
Reaching Out
Sometimes when we are trying to figure out our ideal client, we don’t even know where to start because we haven’t even figured out our style yet. What we see can sometimes be different from what the world sees. If you are completely stuck on what you are even putting out into the world reach out to five creative friends and five non-creative friends and ask them what they think of when they think of your work. Show them your website, your favorite images, or your social media. Have them write down some describing words. If you agree with what they are saying, continue showcasing that. If you feel like they are way off, figure out ways how you could better convey what you want your brand to be about.
Blasts from the Past
Think about your absolute favorite clients you’ve ever had. What did you like about them? What made them stand out? Create a list of why working with them was so special. Once you can identify what you like in past clients, you can help create those experiences for future clients.
Ideal Client Exercise
It’s time to figure out just WHO your ideal client is. There is no better way to do this then by actually sitting down and mapping out everything about them. You can even draw them if that helps! Once you truly get in the mind of who they are, it will be easier when posting, sharing, and reaching out to potential clients. Every time you are ready to post something, think “Would Beyoncé and Jay Z like this?” (only if Queen Bey and Jay Z are your ideal clients, of course.) Here’s a few questions to get you started:
What type of jobs do your clients have?
What is their favorite form of social media?
Are they college educated?
What do they value the most?
Where do they shop?
Keep going with it! Explore everything there is about them! You can even name them to help make it easier to remember when you are posting.
Important Reminder: Not everyone’s ideal client will be the same! That’s the best part. Really tailor it to fit who YOU want and don’t worry if they don’t fit what everyone else is doing. That’s the best part. There is a perfect fit for everyone so don’t settle. There is a market for all types of people! Figure out who your ideal clients are and pursue them with all your heart. Your calendar will fill up with dream clients in no time!
I’m so lucky that just about every client now is my ideal client, so I’m telling you this process works! I have the best couples ever!!
