January 4, 2021
2021 already feels different than past years. By this point in a new year, I have a plan in place for the next twelve months. I have a list of dreams and goals that fills the beginning half of my notebook. Motivation and drive pulses through my veins every January. But right now, it’s not happening.
There are no business goals, no aspirations, no vision of where I want to be at the end of the year. It’s SO unlike me to not have a ton of goals and plans! As 2020 closed and we started making our move preparations for January, a sense of serenity filled my spirit. 2021 will be so different for us already. In a few short weeks after months of waiting, we’ll be heading to Washington to start our new lives in the Pacific Northwest. The world as I know it is going to change dramatically. A new state, a new home, and possibly a new direction for my business.
Because of all the changes, I can feel my spirit telling me to rest. I’m not anxious about not having a ton of goals like my fellow creative friends and business owners. For the first time in 10 years of my business, I’m content with where I am right now in this moment. That might all change after we move but for now, I’m okay. That’s what brought me to my word of the year for 2021: Embrace
My life is going to look different this year and instead of trying to control everything, I want to embrace it.
Embrace this new journey.
Embrace wherever my business brings me.
Embrace new discoveries.
Embrace our new state and home.
To me, embracing doesn’t mean everything will be easy. I know I will still have moments this year that will feel difficult. There is still so much to learn and adjustments to be made. Just because we are in a new year doesn’t mean everything will magically be perfect. For me though, I’m letting go of trying to force things to go MY way. Instead I’m trusting the process and choosing to embrace the journey.
Thankfully, my associates and I still get to photograph some beautiful weddings this year in Wisconsin. Bigger and better things will happen this year but for the first time in a long time, I don’t have to know what it’s going to be. I may not have huge goals this year but I do want to explore, learn, and adventure. I want to work on our new home, meet new people, celebrate 10 years in business, and fall in love with our new state. With practice, I hope to work on being fully present for whatever 2021 has in store for me.
Whatever your goals are for this new year, I hope you find joy and peace. I hope your deepest desires are fulfilled and this year is better than ever before! Tell me what you are dreaming about for the new year. Do you have a word of the year for yourself? Share it!
