When you start a new business, you will never have all the answers. I’m sure that’s not a surprise to you, yet as entrepreneurs we try so hard to figure everything out for ourselves. We get so wrapped up in wanting to know everything and do everything right that we might miss some steps along the way. I’m here to tell you, it is OKAY if you do not know it all. That means you are human, hooray! There will always be parts of your business (and life, if we are being completely honest) that you will not be an expert in. Because of that, never be afraid to ask for help, especially when it comes to taxes!
Confession time: not filing my taxes correctly keeps me up at night. I seriously have nightmares that I will miss something by mistake, get audited and go to jail. Irrational, I know, but because of that fear, as soon as I started my business I asked for help. Even when my photography business was in infancy, I hired an accountant right away. If you skim through this entire post, I want this to be the one thing you take away from it:
HIRE AN ACCOUNTANT!!
Why try to sort out this tax thing on your own? I’ve been working with my accountant for five years now and he has helped me the entire way so I never have to worry about it. As my business grew he prepared me, tax wise, every step of the way. When I had to pay sales tax, setting up my quarterly tax payments, making sure I deducted every possible expense – not only was he there for me, but he explained the process so I could understand why I had to do this. Just like you’re an expert in photography, design, etc; he is an expert in his field. So why would you try to add CPA to your resume? Asking for help and hiring an accountant will release your tax burden and make your life SO MUCH EASIER!
If you have not started your taxes yet and still need help, email me and I will gladly give you the name of my accountant.
In the spirit of Asking For Help, I wanted to share some of my favorite tax related posts, articles and blogs!
