As a photographer, even though I’m on my feet all day for weddings and shoots, the rest of the time, I’m sitting. I’m sitting when I’m answering emails. I’m sitting when I’m editing photos. I’m sitting when I’m taking a break and having lunch. I think you get the point, I’m constantly in a stagnant position for weeks at a time. To break the sitting rut, I try everyday to add movement. Sometimes I go for a walk/run, sometimes I try to keep up with Kyle when he does a P90X workout (whoa, are those tough.) But my favorite activity is yoga.
I’ve been practicing yoga since high school. I love that it’s more than just a workout; it balances mind, body, breath, and spirit. Everyday I try to do at least one hour of yoga. Yes, there are some days I miss, but I truly try my best to hit it everyday. Creating movement and awareness in your body is extremely important, especially if you are sitting at a desk for eight hours a day. You might think, “I’m not flexible enough. I can’t do yoga.” Not true! Yoga is all about listening to your body and what it’s telling you is comfortable. With the yoga poses, just go as far as your body will allow. That’s the beauty of it, anyone can do it!
If yoga isn’t your thing, that’s totally cool. But what I challenge you to do is to make sure you are moving for at least one hour a day. You’ll find that not only will it benefit your body, but it will benefit your mind as well. My mind is constantly going and thinking about everything little thing. When I get up and move, I can hit the pause button on my worrying brain and just enjoy the day! You can too! Go for a run, walk your dog, go swimming, ride a bike, try yoga – so many choices to pick from! All that matters is that you get out and you get moving!
