Your wedding DJ is so important. The music sets the mood for the whole reception. It’s more than just setting up a playlist and hitting play on a computer screen, the DJ is the master of ceremonies for your first evening as husband and wife. They can get the party going or settle the crowd down when it’s time for important speeches and toasts. They help control the night so you and your guests can enjoy the reception. I have met many DJs over the years and one of my favorites to work with are the wonderful people at Elite Music Service. Professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly nice – these musical masters bring more than just great tunes to a reception. I met with owner, Scott Batterham, who started Elite over fifteen years ago, to chat about all things weddings, music, and his favorite part about working in the wedding industry.
When did you start your business? 2000
What interested you about your craft? Why start your own business? I had worked for another company and did not like the way they conducted their business so my partner, Don Hando, and I decided to start Elite Music Service. We really enjoy creating a new reception for each and every couple, because each couple is unique and has their own story.
What kind of schooling/training have you had? I/we have attended and participated in many workshops and training sessions provided by people that are considered experts in our industry and at Mobile DJ National Conventions. Every wedding and every event is a learning process for us because we are always doing something or creating something that we have never done before.
How would you describe your style? At Elite Music Service we pride ourselves in matching our styles to those of our clients. We always meet with our couples to get to know them because each couple that we work with has their own styles, personalities, likes and dislikes and that is important for us to know.
What are some of your unique offerings? Unique to our company is the fact that we provide a reception that is crafted around each couple. We do not have a “canned” show or a “set” play list of music because every couple and every crowd is different and each requires a different approach for success. You only get one chance to do it right.
Favorite part of weddings (or the wedding planning process?) My favorite part of weddings are the hugs I receive from the bride & groom at the end of the night.
Favorite business experience? I personally have done 6 weddings for the same family, so many familiar faces it was like doing weddings for my own family members.
Any Helpful Tips for Brides searching for their DJ? Research, research, research…read reviews, ask other wedding professionals, ask to communicate with past clients. Whenever possible meet in person. You spend an awful lot of time and money and you want to make sure that the people that you work with are the “right” fit for you…it makes the whole process so much more enjoyable.
What is in store for Elite in the future? We are always looking to add new things/services where it makes sense, we listen to what are couples are asking for and what are the new trends in the industry. We will continue to learn, grow, and revel in the unique challenges that each couple brings to the table.
