As a Seattle-based photographer with over a decade of experience capturing families in their best light, I understand the importance of choosing the right attire for your family photo session. The clothes you wear not only reflect your personal style but also set the tone for the entire shoot. To ensure your family portraits stand the test of time, here are some tips on what to wear for your next session.
The best piece of advice is to always consult with your photographer first. They may have specific tips or ideas of what they like their clients to wear. For all my clients, I often a complimentary Welcome Guide full of helpful photo session tips and outfit inspiration. I also provide them with access to my Client Closet where they can choose beautiful dresses and clothes for their kids. This allows for a stress-free and totally enjoyable family photoshoot experience!
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit for family photos. Remember those family photos on the beach with every member wearing a white button down and jeans? I think we ALL had one of those photo shoots growing up. Instead, opt for coordinating colors and styles that complement each other. Choose a color palette consisting of two or three complementary hues and mix and match different shades within that palette. This creates visual interest without being too overwhelming.
While it’s tempting to follow trends, timeless classics will never go out of style. For a sophisticated look, consider incorporating pieces like tailored blazers, crisp button-down shirts, well-fitted trousers, and flowing dresses. Flowing dresses can add a touch of whimsy and romance to your family photos. Opt for dresses with classic silhouettes and timeless prints, such as floral or gingham, that will remain stylish for years to come.
When dressing kids for a family photo session, opt for timeless pieces that are both comfortable and stylish. For boys, classic options include collared shirts paired with chinos or tailored shorts, complemented by a knit sweater. Girls can shine in timeless dresses with simple silhouettes, such as peter pan collars or A-line shapes, adorned with subtle details like lace or embroidery. Knit rompers are such cute options for babies!
In addition to these classics, consider adding playful touches to your children’s outfits to capture their youthful spirit. Incorporate fun patterns or colors through accessories like hair bows, suspenders, bow ties, or headbands. These details add personality to their looks while still maintaining a timeless feel.
While style is important, comfort should not be overlooked. Choose clothing that fits well and allows you to move freely and comfortably during the photo session, especially for children! Uncomfortable clothing can affect your posture and confidence, which can ultimately impact the outcome of your photos. Choose items that are low maintenance and don’t require a lot of fuss during your session.
In addition to solid colors, incorporating classic understated patterns can elevate your family’s style while maintaining a timeless appeal. Opt for patterns such as floral, houndstooth, gingham, or subtle stripes, which add visual interest without overwhelming the overall look of your photos. Remember to keep patterns subtle and complementary to ensure they enhance, rather than distract from, the overall aesthetic of your family portraits.
The texture of your clothing can add depth and visual interest to your photos. Opt for fabrics like silk, linen, cashmere, and wool, which have a luxurious feel and drape beautifully. Incorporating different textures adds dimension to your photos and creates a more dynamic visual experience.
Pro-tip: Make sure to steam or iron your clothes prior to your session! Maybe even bring a portable steamer to your photo session. Nothing is worse than getting your photos back and seeing wrinkles all over your clothes!
Details matter when it comes to creating high-end, timeless photos. Pay attention to the little things like accessories, shoes, and grooming. Choose accessories that complement your outfit without overpowering it, such as delicate jewelry or hair accessories. Ensure shoes are clean, as they can easily become a focal point in your photos. And don’t forget about grooming – clean haircuts, manicured nails, and well-groomed hair can make a world of difference in the final outcome of your photos.
The location of your photo session can also influence your outfit choices. For outdoor shoots in Seattle’s picturesque landscapes, consider incorporating natural elements into your attire, such as earthy tones or subtle floral prints. For urban settings, opt for sleek, modern pieces that complement the cityscape.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to let your family’s personality shine through in your outfit choices. Whether it’s a quirky accessory or a pop of color, incorporating elements that reflect your family’s unique style and personality will make your photos truly one-of-a-kind.
