As a Seattle-based photographer specializing in newborn photography, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing and preserving some of life’s most precious moments. From those tender first days of a newborn’s life to the loving embrace of a growing family, each session is full of so much joy and love. However, achieving those stunning, high-end photos requires careful preparation. Here are a few tips on how to ensure a beautiful and stress-free session:

Booking and Preparation

  • Schedule Early: Timing is crucial when it comes to newborn photography. Aim to schedule your session within the first two weeks of your baby’s arrival when they’re most likely to sleep deeply and curl up into those adorable poses. But don’t worry if you need a little more time. Any time in that first month of your little one’s life is perfect! For my clients, I add your due date to my calendar so we have an estimate of time. Once baby arrives, I have my clients email me to confirm their session date. It’s SO important that you feel okay after your little one is born. So much happens after giving birth and my first priority is your comfort!
  • Communicate Your Vision: Prior to the session, communicate your vision and preferences. Will the session take place at your home or the photographer’s studio? What will be provided and what do you have to bring? Clear communication will help your photographer tailor the session to your unique desires, ensuring a personalized experience. For my families, I have a custom Newborn Session Guide that is full of even more helpful tips to completely prepare for their session. I also work with them to create a fully customized and hassle-free experience.

Decide on Location

  • Studio Session: Studios are great if you are looking for beautiful light, a controlled environment, professional assistance, and ease. For my clients, all you have to do is show up and I’ll take care of the rest! The downside: planning the logistics of traveling to the studio.
  • At Home Session: Home is great for the comfort, personalized setting, and convenience. The only downsides: you’ll have to clean all the spaces you’ll be photographing in and the lighting may be less than ideal.

What to Wear

  • Opt for Neutral Tones: Choose soft, neutral colors such as creams, whites, grays, or pastels for a timeless and cohesive look. Coordinate outfits among family members, focusing on complementary hues rather than exact matches. Check out this blog post on a more in-depth look of what to wear.
  • Comfort is Key: Prioritize comfort for both you and your baby by selecting soft, breathable fabrics free of scratchy tags or embellishments. For newborns, simple onesies or swaddles often work best.
  • Consider the Setting: Tailor your attire to the location and style of the photo session. Flowing dresses or skirts are perfect for outdoor shoots, while cozy sweaters or classic button-down shirts create a timeless vibe indoors.
  • Client Closet: For my families, I provide a complimentary client wardrobe full of beautiful dresses and children’s clothes for you to use for your session!

Preparing Older Siblings

  • Talk About the Session: Prepare older siblings for the photo session by explaining what to expect and emphasizing the importance of being gentle and patient with their new sibling.
  • Involve Them in the Process: Encourage older siblings to be part of the session by letting them choose their outfits or select props to incorporate into the photos. This involvement helps them feel included and excited about the experience.
  • Practice Poses and Interactions: Spend some time practicing interactions with older siblings before the session. Teach them how to hold the baby safely and gently, and encourage natural interactions such as cuddling or kissing their new sibling.

Day of the Session

  • Arrive Early: Give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the studio or location before the scheduled start time. Arriving early helps alleviate any stress and allows for a smooth transition into the session.
  • Prepare the Baby: To help your newborn feel comfortable and relaxed during the session, try to keep them well-fed and up for at least an hour for the session so they are nice and sleepy. Dress them in clothing that avoids any marks on their delicate skin.
  • Set the Scene: Create a serene environment for the photoshoot by dimming the lights and playing soft music in the background. A cozy atmosphere will help soothe your baby.
  • If Your Baby is Fussy: A few quick tips to try if your baby is fussy during your session: Play a white noise machine. Add an extra layer or blanket or turn up the heat (babies get cold quickly.) Gentle rocking or bouncing. Take a break for baby to feed. Diaper change!
  • Relax and Enjoy: Trust in your photographer’s expertise and creative vision. Don’t worry if you or your baby need to take breaks, that’s SO normal! Embrace the moment with your family. Relax, enjoy the experience, and allow the genuine love and connection to shine through in your photos.

After the Session

  • Invest in Quality Prints: Once the session is complete, invest in high-quality prints or albums to preserve your precious memories for years to come. Choose archival-quality products that will stand the test of time, allowing you to cherish these timeless moments for generations.
  • Share and Celebrate: Finally, share your beautiful photos with friends and family, celebrating the arrival of your newest family member! Display
